The city’s arts commissioners have recommended five sculptures, ranging from a cellphone-reading figure to green whimsical creatures, for temporary public display at popular sites around town.

After much debate Monday, March 4, the commissioners also agreed to recommend that one sculpture, which wasn’t picked for those five sites, be displayed on a temporary basis at the soon-to-open Pacific View Arts Center.

All of these recommendations will go to the City Council for approval.

The Pacific View site was a last-minute addition. It came up as an option after the review process for the other five sites had concluded, city arts program administrator Collette Murphy told the commissioners March 4.

While this site, which is on the northwest corner of the Pacific View property, wasn’t included in the review process, this is an opportunity the commissioners shouldn’t pass up if they want a sculpture selected before the art center’s grand opening this summer , she said.

“There will not be another opportunity to select one in time for this to be in place,” Murphy said.

Commissioners told her they had some hesitancy about picking an art piece for what is proposed to become the city’s main arts facility, given that the public didn’t get to weigh in on the selection. They ultimately voted, with Commissioner Robin Fator opposed, to recommend that the City Council choose a metal piece featuring geometric shapes, but said that it should be on display for only a year or less.

Their recommended pieces for the five spots will be on display for two years, with an option for a third year.

Those five display sites are:

  • The entrance to Oakcrest Park at 1219 Encinitas Blvd. Commissioners recommended it receive a multi-armed, blue glass sculpture, which netted a 4.28 score out of a 5 possible in the public review process.
  • The southeast corner of Newcastle Avenue and Liverpool Drive, across the street from the Cardiff Library. Its recommended sculpture is a curving stainless steel, glass and mosaic piece that received a 4.52 point ranking.
  • The back side of Sun Vista Park at 2011 Avenida La Costa. It’s poised to get a whimsical piece featuring a green figure with mushroom cap-style head.
  • Leucadia Oaks park, near the corner of Sanford Street and N. Vulcan Avenue. Its proposed sculpture is a 6-foot-tall metal person holding a cell phone. The piece received a 3.28 ranking.
  • Entrance to Little Oaks Equestrian Park at 2879 Lone Jack Road. It’s proposed to get a violin-playing rabbit sculpture that received a 3.91 ranking.

The geometric metal sculpture that’s now proposed for the Pacific View site received a 2.01 ranking at the Oakcrest Park site.

The city received 38 submissions for the sculpture display program. A review panel, which included three city arts commissioners, narrowed that list down to eight options, and the city then collected public comments on those choices. More than 1,000 comments were received.
